Deutsch A1
The language course is open to students at all levels of study at the University of Lucerne and is aimed at participants without prior knowledge.
Learning objectives: By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases related to personal information, daily routines, and immediate needs.
- Introduce themselves and others, and ask and answer simple questions about personal details.
- Communicate in a basic way, provided their conversation partner speaks slowly and clearly.
- Develop essential skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in practical, everyday situations.
The course introduces learners to essential German in authentic Swiss contexts. Topics include:
- Personal information – introductions, nationality, profession
- Life in Switzerland – places, numbers, time, languages
- Work & everyday life – jobs, money, shopping
- Leisure & social interactions – activities, appointments, weekends
- Housing & home – flats, neighbours, dialects
- Health – nutrition, doctor’s visits
- Daily routines & household – tasks, past tense use
Grammar and communicative strategies are integrated throughout.
A final assessment at the end of the course covers listening, reading, speaking, and writing to consolidate key skills.

Teaching material: Deutsch in der Schweiz A1 (Klett & Balmer Verlag). The book will be provided to students in the first lesson.
This coursebook is specifically tailored to learners living in Switzerland and includes practical language, grammar summaries, exercises, and authentic dialogues in both standard German and Swiss German. Audio materials are available online.
An invoice for the course fees will be sent to registered students during the first weeks of semester.
Certificate of achievement, ECTS points and workload
2 ECTS points can be earned for participation in the semester course. Please note however, that it is fully at the discretion of your home faculty, whether these credits can be transferred to your study programme.
Requirements: regular and active participation in class (max. 4 absences); achievement of the required performance in assessments.
Course certificate: Students who attended the course regularly and participated actively can request a course certificate.
