Sonja Kälin studierte Psychologie an der Universität Bern (B.Sc. 2014, M.Sc. 2017) mit Schwerpunkt in Entwicklungspsychologie und Neuropsychologie und promovierte dort 2022 mit Auszeichnung (summa cum laude). In ihrer Dissertation untersuchte sie die Zusammenhänge zwischen exekutiven Funktionen, Temperament und Metakognition und zeigte dabei insbesondere die zentrale Rolle von Inhibition und Monitoring auf.
Vor ihrer psychologischen Ausbildung erwarb sie ein Primarlehrdiplom und sammelte umfangreiche praktische Erfahrung im schulischen Kontext als Primarlehrerin.
Nach ihrer Promotion war sie in verschiedenen Funktionen in Forschung und Lehre tätig, unter anderem als Postdoktorandin an der Fakultät für Gesundheitswissenschaften und Medizin der Universität Luzern. Dort beschäftigte sie sich mit den psychologischen und sozioökonomischen Folgen von Kinderkrebs und vertiefte ihre methodischen Kompetenzen insbesondere im Bereich qualitativer Forschungsmethoden. Zudem war sie als Dozentin an der Pädagogischen Hochschule Luzern tätig, wo sie im Bereich der sozioemotionalen Entwicklung lehrte, und unterrichtete Entwicklungspsychologie an der Hochschule Luzern.
Seit 2025 ist sie Oberassistentin an der Fakultät für Verhaltenswissenschaften und Psychologie der Universität Luzern im Bereich Kinder- und Jugendpsychologie. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in der sozio-emotionalen Entwicklung im Kindesalter sowie in der Rolle elterlichen Verhaltens für diese Entwicklungsprozesse. Dabei interessiert sie sich insbesondere für alltagsnahe Dynamiken von Eltern-Kind-Interaktionen und deren situative Einbettung. Ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf der Interventionsforschung im Bereich tiergestützter Therapie bei Kindern und Jugendlichen.
