Agostino Mattei graduierte 1995 an der Medizinischen Fakultät der Universität Basel. Im Jahr 2003 erhielt er den FMH-Titel für Urologie und Chirurgische Urologie. Ein Jahr später wurde er in Paris zum „Fellow of the European Society of Urology“ ernannt. 2017 wurde ihm eine Titularprofessur an der Universität Genf verliehen. Seine urologische Karriere startete Agostino Mattei als Assistenzarzt und späterer Oberarzt am Universitätsspital Bern. Während diesen Jahren praktizierte er die konventionelle offene urologische Chirurgie. Nachfolgend wurde er in der Clinique St. Augustin Bordeaux in die laparoskopische und roboterassistierte Chirurgie eingeführt. Seit 2007 ist er am Luzerner Kantonsspital (LUKS) in Luzern tätig und seit 2016 Klinikleiter der Urologie. Agostino Mattei führte die Roboterchirurgie am LUKS ein und ist massgeblich an deren Weiterentwicklung beteiligt. Während der vergangenen Jahre profilierte sich Agostino Mattei auf dem Gebiet der Roboterchirurgie auch in der klinischen Forschung und Ausbildung. Mehrere wissenschaftliche Artikel in renommierten internationalen Zeitschriften zeugen davon.
