Grants and loans

Students studying for their first degree generally turn to the canton in which their parents reside for education funding. The application forms for education funding from the Canton of Lucerne can be downloaded from the vocational and further education in the Canton of Lucerne website. Further smaller grants that can be applied for are continuously advertised on notices.

Insurances

AHV (Old-age and surviving dependants’ insurance)

In winter of the current academic year, students registered at the university and liable to old-age and surviving dependants’ insurance contributions (from 1st January following students’ 20th birthdays) will receive a questionnaire and a letter from the Ausgleichskasse des Kan­tons Luzern (social security office ot the Canton of Lucerne) about making AHV/disability insurance (IV)/income compensation (EO) contributions. 

Provisions  

All students with a civil residence in Switzerland (irrespective of their nationality or gender) are liable to make AHV/IV/EO contributions from 1 January of the year following that of their 20th birthday).

The following people are, however, exempt from the obligation to make contributions: 

  • Foreign nationals who undergo certain studies in Switzerland but do not take up residence here
  • Students who earned at least CHF 4,406.00 from a job over the last calendar year; the wage statement must be attached to the questionnaire and returned to the Lucerne

Financial and budgeting advice

The budget advisory office of the Frauenzentrale (Women’s Centre) Lucerne provides advice and information in relation to financial and personal budget questions. The fees for the advice depend on your individual financial circumstances.

All meetings in person must be prearranged with the office by telephone.
