Leave of absence
Students who are unable to attend courses for an extended period due to important reasons (illness, accident, maternity, work placement, military or civil service) may request a leave of absence in writing from the responsible Dean’s office. Leaves of absence are valid for one semester and can generally be granted no more than twice per study level. Students on leave remain enrolled at the University of Lucerne but are exempt from paying semester fees. During the leave period, students cannot attend courses or take examinations. However, students on leave may continue to use the university libraries, and their student email account remains active.
Deadlines for applying for a leave of absence
Requests for a leave of absence must be submitted in writing to the Dean's Office by the following deadlines:
- Spring semester: 15 February
- Autumn semester: 15 September
Requests received after these dates will not be processed.
