Gender equality

Gender equality and the elimination of existing discrimination are central objectives of the University of Lucerne. The University Statutes stipulate that gender equality must be taken into account in the fulfilment of all university tasks - particularly in research, teaching and the promotion of early-career researchers - and that it should be advanced through appropriate measures. A key aim is to achieve a balanced representation of the sexes at all levels and across all bodies.

The proportion of women at all stages of the academic career has increased over the past two decades. However, although more women are studying and obtaining doctorates, significantly fewer than men remain in academia, and they are less likely to hold leadership positions. Accordingly, support for the academic careers of female researchers remains one of the four key areas of action in the the 2025–2028 Implementation Plan for the Diversity Strategy.

In addition to supporting early-career female researchers, the University of Lucerne is pursuing a balanced gender ratio among professorships and is implementing targeted measures to ensure equal opportunities in appointment procedures. The University of Lucerne is also actively committed to protection against sexual and sexist harassment, which constitute serious forms of gender discrimination.
