Human Rights Violations under a Military Dictatorship: A Case Study on Myanmar/Burma

The course will examine the impact of the world's longest running armed conflict on fundamental human rights in Myanmar. Particular attention will be given past and ongoing persecution of Myanmar ethnic and religious minorities (including the Rohingya) and how local human rights movements have resisted military control. The course will end with an examination on the role of the international community in potentially helping and harming Myanmar's transition towards peace and democracy.
