Medicine and Medical Sciences
Commitment to optimized healthcare
The Department of Medicine and Medical Sciences deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the context of clinical and medical sciences in research and teaching regarding optimal healthcare along the patient pathway. In addition to this individual perspective, health services research is conducted with reference to a systemic perspective with a focus on interdisciplinarity and interprofessionality, whereby the continuum of lifelong care is considered alongside acute conditions in chronic diseases. In terms of training, the department is responsible for the Joint Medical Master in cooperation with the University of Zurich, as well as a doctoral program in human medicine (Dr. med.). In clinical and medical research, there are collaborations with various partner institutions such as the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital, the Swiss Paraplegic Centre, the Hirslanden Klinik St. Anna, and Lucerne Psychiatry.
Unique focus
The establishment of the Department of Medicine and Medical Sciences at the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine at the University of Lucerne is a unique feature in the Swiss educational and research landscape: In contrast to a traditional medical faculty, the Section belongs to an interdisciplinary and interprofessional faculty at a university focused on the human sciences. The scientific basis of the biomedical sciences is realized through cooperations. Accordingly, the professorships are not based on medical specialist disciplines, but on thematic profiles such as community medicine, person-centered medicine of childhood and adolescence, and interprofessional primary care. Post-doctoral qualifications in clinical medical sciences are interdisciplinary and focus on health services research.
Innovative centers
The Center for Clinical Research at the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital, founded in 2024, is an important pillar of research. The center forms a platform for high-quality clinical medical research at the interface between the faculty, Lucerne Cantonal Hospital, and other researchers. The Center of Primary and Community Care, which is committed to improvements in basic outpatient care and new and innovative models of care, is also based at the Department of Medicine and Medical Sciences.
