Women in Academia
We are a working group by, with, and for early-career women researchers at the University of Lucerne: connected, feminist, and pleasantly impatient with the status quo. Science should not only become more open but also more just. Change shouldn’t wait for the next generation; it should start now.
In workshops, lunches, and discussions, we create opportunities to share knowledge and experiences, ask questions, and challenge structures. Everyone is welcome – regardless of discipline, age, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, nationality, race, or gender – who cares about feminist issues within academia, is interested to learn more, or committed to advocacy.
Women includes all individuals who identify with the term. We have chosen not to use Women* because we believe that anyone who identifies as a woman is included, and the term doesn’t solely refer to cisgender women. Therefore, we decided that an additional asterisk is unnecessary. However, we remain open to feedback and critique!
Networking instead of elbowing
Science doesn't have to be lonely. We bring together women in academia to foster genuine exchange, mutual support, and sometimes simply to share a heartfelt “Ugh, same”. We also create spaces where women can connect and raise their voices together, rather than getting lost in competition.
Equality without footnotes
Whether it's about PhD conditions, mentorship, family planning, or financial insecurity – access, visibility, and career opportunities are still too often distributed according to old rules. We advocate for fair conditions in everyday academic life.
See it, name it
Discrimination in academia manifests through looks, comments, actions, and structures. We aim to make visible what too often goes unnoticed: sexism, microaggressions, and structural discrimination.
If you have concerns, ideas, or feedback, feel free to reach out anytime at wia@unilu.ch
We’re always eager to learn more about intersectionality and queer perspectives, like to discuss patriarchal structures (also over drinks & snacks), and we know: academia can do better. Especially for women.
You can always find our events, workshops, and offerings here or in the MOL newsletter.
It’s worth checking in and even more worth joining.
