Publication funding
This page lists the most important publication funding instruments. In addition to the traditional funding options via the Swiss National Science Foundation and Read&Publish Agreements, the Open Access Publication Fund will be available to members of the University of Lucerne from January 2025.
Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) supports the open access publication of articles, book chapters and books. The SNSF finances the publication of journal articles and book chapters that have been produced as part of an SNSF project. In addition, the SNSF finances scolarly book publications, provided they are published in Gold Open Access – regardless of whether the publication was the result of an SNSF project or not.
The SNSF finances journal articles and book chapters as long as they have been produced as part of an SNSF-funded project and are published in a Gold Open Access journal or peer-reviewed edited volume. Funding applications can also be submitted after the end of the project.

The SNSF funds comprehensive, scientific and peer-reviewed works as long as they are published via a Gold Open Access publisher – regardless of whether they were produced as part of an SNSF project or not. This also includes anthologies, legal commentaries and editions. Textbooks, special editions of journals, conference proceedings, new editions and translations are not funded. Parallel to the digital Open Access publication, a printed version of the work can be published and sold. The costs for printing and distribution of the printed copy must be financed by the sales proceeds.

The SNSF finances dissertations and postdoctoral theses as long as they are published in Gold Open Access – regardless of whether they were produced as part of an SNSF project or not. The costs for printing and distribution of the printed copy must be financed by the sales revenue. In the case of qualification theses, the reviews are considered peer reviews.

Further information on the individual agreements and the journals included can be found on the website of the Central and University Library of Lucerne.
Open Access Publication Fund

FAQ
Funding is primarily provided for journal articles, books and book chapters that are published in Gold Open Access. All parts of the funded work must be permanently accessible to readers worldwide at no cost immediately upon publication.
Not funded are works whose publication can be covered by other sources of funding (e.g. SNSF, European Research Council) or by a Read&Publish Agreement, hybrid open access models (works of which not all parts are freely accessible upon publication) and so-called Special Issues.
In principle, all members of the University of Lucerne are eligible to apply, provided they are the corresponding author and/or main author of the work. A maximum of three applications per person can be submitted per year.
A maximum of CHF 2500 per journal article or book chapter and a maximum of CHF 8000 per book will be covered. If the costs are higher, the remaining amount can be financed by grants from the respective faculty and/or other funding institutions.
Gold Open Access means that all components of the work are permanently accessible worldwide at no cost to the readership immediately upon publication.
