Formally known as the “Zug Institute for Blockchain Research at the University of Lucerne”, ZIBR is a joint initiative of the University of Lucerne and the Canton of Zug. The externally funded institute, based in the city of Zug, brings together researchers who focus on the social dimensions and implications of blockchain technology from a humanities perspective.

Professors Max Baumgart (Energy Law and Blockchain), Adam Hayes (Sociology and Blockchain), Patrik Hummel (Philosophy and Blockchain), Claude Humbel (Private Law and Blockchain) and Markus Schreiber (Public Law and Blockchain) have already begun their work. Two additional professorships are currently being advertised in the fields of “Political Economy and Blockchain” and “Political Science and Blockchain”. In total, nine chairs are planned.

The event, which will be held in English on 23 January at the Casino Theater Zug, will feature speeches by Heinz Tännler, Member of the Cantonal Government and Director of Finance for the Canton of Zug, among others. The programme will include several panel discussions, alongside video portraits of the professors. The event will conclude with a networking reception.
