Prof. Dr. Christoph Bauer has been a full professor for private law, civil procedure law, and debt enforcement and insolvency law at the University of Lucerne since 2025.

After completing his studies in St. Gallen, he obtained his doctorate from the University of St. Gallen in 2010 with a thesis on general contract law (summa cum laude, Walther Hug Prize).

This was followed by over 15 years as an attorney-at-law specialising in litigation in Zurich, and from 2019 as a partner at the commercial law firm Kellerhals Carrard. Upon taking up his professorship in Lucerne, he became Of Counsel.

Besides his law firm practise, he wrote his habilitation and earned the venia legendi at the University of Basel in 2022 with a habilitation thesis on subjective ownership rights and intangible objects. Since 2014, he has given lectures at the Universities of Basel and St Gallen.

Christoph Bauer’s teaching and research focus on contract law, tort law and property law. He has a particular research interest in novel ownership rights, as well as in borderline issues and the interplay between various areas of private law, both amongst themselves and in relation to civil procedure law and debt enforcement and insolvency law.

He is the author of several monographs, journal articles and a contributor to commentaries on civil law, contract law and civil procedure law, including the Basel Commentaries (BSK) on the Civil Code and the Contract Law, the Bernese Commentary (BK) on the Civil Procedure Code, and in the Concise Commentary on Swiss Private Law. In addition to teaching and research, Christoph Bauer serves as Director of Continuing Legal Education at the Faculty of Law. He is also a member of the Equal Opportunities Commission (GLK) and the Continuing Education Commission (WBK). 

He is also available to draft expertises and expert reports on matters of private law, civil procedure law and debt enforcement and insolvency law.
