Christoph Bauer has been a Professor of Private Law, Civil Procedure, and Debt Enforcement and Insolvency Law at the University of Lucerne since 2025.

After completing his studies in St. Gallen, he was awarded his doctorate by the University of St. Gallen in 2010 for a thesis on contract law (summa cum laude, Walther Hug Prize).

He then spent more than 15 years practising as an attorney-at-law specialising in litigation in Zurich, and became a partner at the commercial law firm Kellerhals Carrard in 2019. Upon taking up his professorship in Lucerne, he transitioned to the role of Of Counsel.

Alongside his legal practice, he completed his postdoctoral thesis (Habilitation) on subjective ownershop rights and intangible objects and was awarded the lecturing qualification (venia legendi) at the University of Basel in 2022. Since 2014, he has taught at the Universities of Basel and St Gallen.

Christoph Bauer’s teaching and research focus on contract law, tort law and property law. He has a particular research interest in novel ownership rights, as well as in borderline issues and the interplay between various areas of private law, both in relation to each other and to civil procedure law and debt enforcement and insolvency law.

He is the author of several monographs- and journal articles, and is a contributor to legal commentaries on civil law, contract law and civil procedure law, including the Basel Commentaries (BSK) on the Civil Code and the Code of Obligations, the Bernese Commentary (BK) on the Civil Procedure Code, and the Concise Commentary on Swiss Private Law (CHK).

In addition to his teaching and research, Christoph Bauer serves as Director of Continuing Legal Education at the Faculty of Law. He is also a member of the Equal Opportunities Commission (GLK) and the Continuing Education Commission (WBK). 

He is also available to provide legal opinions and expert reports on matters of private law, civil procedure law and debt enforcement and insolvency law.
