PolSem raised a large number of third-party funds in 2017

The Department of Political Science at the University of Lucerne was particularly successful in attracting competitively awarded third-party funds in 2017. A total of almost CHF 4 million was raised. This was a continuation of earlier successes.

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) has decided to finance the following persons and projects:

  • Prof. Dr. Alrik Thiem was awarded an SNF professorship for his project "ACCORds: Advancing Configurational Comparative Research Methods" (CHF 1.365 million).
  • Prof. Dr. Lena Schaffer has received an AP Energy Grant for her project: "Beyond Policy Adoption: Implications of Energy Policy on Parties, Publics, and Individuals" (CHF 922.000).
  • Dr. Denise Traber was awarded an Ambizione fellowship with her project "The divided people: polarization of political attitudes in Europe" (CHF 523 280)
  • Prof. Dr. Joachim Blatter and Dr. Diego Garzia received funding for their major project "Towards transnational Voting in Europe!?". (CHF 581 000).
  • Prof. Dr. Andreas Balthasar's project "What policy actors believe in - How do voters and members of parliament judge the credibility of expert statements? "successful in basic research at the SNSF (CHF 290 000).

In addition to these 3.7 million funds from the Swiss National Science Foundation, additional project funds are provided by other third-party funding sources:

  • Prof. Dr. Alexander Trechsel and Dr. Diego Garzia managed to receive co-financing for the project "Towards transnational Voting in Europe!?" through the European University Institute in Florence. The project entitled "SPACEU 2019: Helping mobile EU citizens to exercise their political rights in EU parliamentary elections" is funded by the European Commission (DG Justice and Consumers) with 105 000 Euro.
  • Prof. Dr. Joachim Blatter has been commissioned by the Federal Commission for Migration Issues (FCM) to prepare a study on the subject of "Citizenship in times of transnational migration: opportunities and dangers of dual citizenship". The EMK financed this study with 85,000 CHF; it is carried out in cooperation with Dr. Martina Sochin from the Liechtenstein Institute and Dr. Michael Buess from DemoScope.

With these successes, the Department of Political Science follows on from previous achievements.

In its 10 years of existence, PolSem was able to attract not only two SNF professors but also three Ambizione fellows and four Sciex fellows to Lucerne. In addition, ten project applications were approved during this period.
