The University of Lucerne senate can award the title of honorary senator of the university in recognition and appreciation of an individual who has made an extremely valuable contribution to the university over a prolonged period.

Under the associated regulations (in German), honorary senators may not be members of the university when the honour is awarded by the rector at Dies Academicus. This distinction gives the holder a lifelong entitlement to be invited to key academic events, as well as to regularly receive various information documents and publications.
