Andreas Furrer graduated from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) in 1989, going on to receive his Master of European Law from the University of Saarbrücken (Germany) in 1992. He completed his doctorate at the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland) and the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence (Italy) in 1993. His doctoral dissertation was awarded the 1994 Latsis Prize for outstanding scientific achievement. He was admitted to the bar in the same year.

Between 1995 and spring 2000, he was a researcher at the Centre of European Law and Politics (ZERP) at the University of Bremen (Germany), where he also taught law. He completed his post-doctoral qualification at the University of St. Gallen in 2000. In spring 2001, he started a professorship with the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). When the School of Law was founded at the University of Lucerne, his SNSF professorship was gradually transferred to a full professorship at the University.

Between 2003 and 2005, Professor Furrer was one of the directors at the former KMU Institute for Small Businesses at the University of Lucerne. He was head of the research committee between 2003 and July 2010, and prorector responsible for research from October 2006 to July 2010.

Since September 2014, Professor Furrer has been the director of the Centre for Logistics and Transport Law (KOLT) and was director of the primius scholarship programme at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lucerne from 2011 to 2020.

In addition to his Professorship, Andreas Furrer was a consultant at Pestalozzi Lachenal Patry from 2000 to 2007, a partner at the law firm MME in Zug and Zurich from 2007 to 2020 and was CLO at a Blockchain Start-Up from 2020 to 2023, where he was responsible for setting up and expanding a legal Framework. He has been Special Counsel at MLL Legal AG since 2023.
