LIFE Research Projects
LIFE encompasses a range of research projects in the field of research and knowledge transfer, with a focus on musculoskeletal health, oral health, and the interface between the health and social sectors. In addition to research on functioning, we place a particular emphasis on implementation in order to stimulate a shift in thinking within the health system and society an essential prerequisite for the desired paradigm shift.
Low back pain is highly prevalent among adults. In more than 90% of cases, it is classified as non-specific low back pain, meaning that no clear underlying cause can be identified. Non-specific low back pain limits everyday functioning, makes physical and social activities more difficult, and negatively affects well-being and quality of life. Various treatment approaches are used to manage pain, including medication and targeted back exercises. Numerous studies have shown that such exercise-based interventions can reduce pain and help affected individuals become more active again in their daily lives. However, it remains unclear which specific types of exercises are most effective and how they should best be combined within an exercise program. Against this background, our study investigates whether an individualized back training program can reduce low back pain and improve everyday functioning.

This project is based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) of the World Health Organization – a globally recognized framework for systematically capturing functioning, health, and their impact on daily life. Building on this, an international consensus process led to the development of the ICF Core Set for Oral Health. For the first time, it defines the key aspects of functioning relevant to oral health in a standardized way. ClinFIT Oral Health aims to translate this content into a clinically applicable instrument. The goal is to create a practical, internationally compatible tool that facilitates the assessment of functional limitations in everyday dental practice and strengthens patient-centered care.
