According to Jewish tradition, 24 books written primarily in Hebrew are considered the Holy Scriptures. The Christian tradition refers to these as the Old Testament (while Catholicism includes seven additional deuterocanonical books). As a subject, Exegesis of the Old Testament uses philological, philologist and historical methods to examine this corpus, explore its relationship to the cultures of the Ancient Orient and Egypt, and to investigate its theological content.
