Did you know that for St Thomas Aquinas... ?
- faith does not dispense from the use of reason, but rather demands it
- the existence of God is not only an object of faith but can be demonstrated with rational arguments
- if God were (only) one, he would be imperfect and unhappy (because he would be 'alone and lonely')
- even if the world had no beginning in time and existed forever, it would still be created
- we did not even exist in God's mind before we were created
- there are no other possible worlds and no world of ideas
- there is no evil (but only evil individuals)
- there is no corruption (but only corrupt individuals)
- there is no body without a soul and no matter without form
- the immortality of the soul is not a central doctrine of Christianity (as is the resurrection of the whole man, body and soul)
- human happiness does not consist in participating in divine happiness (by renouncing oneself)
- anger is not always a vice but can be a virtue
- one of the worst vices is not to be angry in the face of injustice
- the hope of achieving great things, even if difficult, is not presumption but greatness of spirit
- the renunciation of achieving great things is not humility but pusillanimity
- spiritual vices are more serious than corporal ones, i.e. gluttony and lust
- passions are indispensable to virtue
- prior to original sin, Adam and Eve united in coitus and, indeed, experienced more pleasure!
