Pierre-Louis Blanchard studied biological anthropology, archaeology and palaeontology at the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz, Germany. In his studies, he familiarised himself with genetics, physical anthropology, palaeoanthropology and other fields of work, but placed the focus on the history of anthropology. He graduated with a thesis about the life and work of German anatomist and anthropologist Gustav Albert Schwalbe, an important figure in biological anthropology around 1900.
