We are delighted to welcome Prof. Dr. Marcel Salathé to the University of Lucerne. As an expert at the intersection of health and computer science, he explores the impact of artificial intelligence on research, teaching, and practical applications. He is co-founder of AIcrowd and initiator of the Applied Machine Learning Days—one of Europe’s largest AI conferences. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as President of the Swiss National Science Foundation’s (SNSF) steering committee for the national COVID-19 research programme and was a member of the Swiss National COVID-19 Science Taskforce. His academic journey led him from a PhD at ETH Zurich through Stanford and Pennsylvania State University to EPFL, where he founded the Digital Epidemiology Lab and the EPFL Extension School.

Lecture Title:

AI in Academia: Implications for Research and Teaching

In his keynote, Prof. Dr. Marcel Salathé will demonstrate how artificial intelligence is transforming research, teaching, and learning. He will address how universities should respond to these changes and what implications AI has for academic daily life—from writing and grading to data analysis, collaboration, and more. He will also discuss what constitutes appropriate AI usage and offer practical guidelines and best practices.

A panel discussion with students and faculty will follow, focusing on how to shape a responsible and impactful use of AI in academia. After the lecture, there will be an opportunity for discussion over drinks and snacks.
