Claude Humbel studied law at the University of Zurich, where he also obtained his doctorate. His dissertation, which received the University of Zurich’s annual award, deals with the regulation of pre- and post-trade transparency in the European Union and Switzerland. He also completed an LL.M. degree at the Berkeley School of Law at the University of California, where he was recognised for his academic writing.

After working at an international commercial law firm and the High Court of the Canton of Aargau, Claude Humbel returned to the University of Zurich. As part of his postdoctoral thesis, provisionally entitled “Related-Party Transactions in Swiss Company, Banking and Capital Markets Law”, he is examining the legal framework governing transactions between related parties. During his time as a research assistant at the University of Zurich, he worked in both a chair for private law with a focus on foundation law and a chair for corporate and financial markets law. At the University of Zurich, he held various teaching positions in private, commercial and business law, and held classes on association and foundation law as well as on social enterprise law.

Building on this background, he researches, publishes and lectures on capital markets, foundation and corporate law, with a particular focus on decentralised finance and on the law governing non-profit organisations and social enterprises. Claude Humbel is also the co-editor of the “Novità Giuridiche”, an academic journal published by the Centro competenze tributarie e giuridiche (CCTG) at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI).

Since 2025, Claude Humbel has been working in research and teaching activities for the University of Lucerne as an Assistant Professor of Private Law and Blockchain.
