Dr Marleen Bekker combines academic expertise with practical experience gained early in her career as a nurse working in socially deprived and environmentally polluted neighbourhoods. Her research focuses on how social, political and economic conditions shape the health of populations and of the planet. A further focus of her work lies in European health policy, particularly in translating scientific evidence into effective policy strategies.
The title of her lecture is:
Planetary Health in Geopolitical Times
Heat, environmental pollution and biodiversity loss are increasingly threatening human health worldwide. Certain population groups and regions are particularly affected. At the same time, it is becoming more difficult to mobilise public support for measures to protect planetary health, especially in a politically polarised and geopolitically tense environment.
In her lecture, Dr Bekker addresses current debates on democracy, responsibility and disinformation and expands them through a planetary health perspective. Together with the audience, she will discuss possible actions at local, national and global levels to protect the health of people and the environment.
After the lecture, participants are invited to join us for drinks and snacks.
The lecture will be held in English, is open to the public, and free of charge. Please register by 19 May 2026.
