Dear MOL-Members
The new semester begins with a mixture of anticipation, concern and gratitude. This was clearly evident during our retreat at St. Charles Hall in Meggen: anticipation for the anniversary celebrations, concern about the planned austerity measures, and gratitude for all the commitment you show in the committees (both visible and behind the scenes).
Important in the coming weeks: On 1 October, a national demonstration against the planned budget cuts in higher education will take place in Bern (5 p.m., Bundesplatz).
No matter what is on your mind or how you are starting the semester: Come to the next MOL Apéro on 18 September (first drink on us!) – it's always good to exchange ideas.
In addition: we support your ideas for workshops, networking or cultural formats that bring MOL members together with up to CHF 1'000 – uncomplicated and ongoing. And if you're wondering how to make research more visible, a new guide to science communication provides helpful guidance and shows which channels and support are available at our university.
Kind regards, Your MOL Board

MOL Retreat August 2025
At the end of August, the MOL Board met for its annual retreat at St. Charles Hall in Meggen. The purpose of the meeting was to clarify responsibilities within the Board, consolidate current projects and set priorities for the coming semester. The focus was on issues relating to space and resource policy, ongoing projects (including the postdoc initiative), transparency issues and the planning of future events.
Deputy: More than just a substitute
They often remain invisible – yet they are indispensable: our deputies on university committees. They rarely appear in public, because they only take over the duties of their regular representatives when the latter are unable to attend. This is precisely where their special role lies: they are always ready to quickly familiarise themselves with complex issues and take on responsibility, without knowing whether this moment will ever come. This quiet commitment deserves our recognition.

How and where can research and projects be made visible? What channels and support services are available? The new compact guide provides orientation at a glance and facilitates entry into the diverse possibilities of science communication at our university. The aim is to break down barriers and start a conversation – including about different communication cultures in the faculties. 1 October: Day of Action in Berne
The Federal Council plans to cut federal funding for universities, the ETH Domain, universities of applied sciences and funding institutions such as the SNSF by CHF 460 million per year from 2026 onwards. Among other things, this would jeopardise around 1'500 SNSF positions and 500 projects, impair the quality of teaching and research, and lead to higher tuition fees. actionuni is therefore calling for a day of action in Berne on 1 October 2025. The national rally will begin at 5 p.m. on Bundesplatz.

Would you like to improve or expand your R skills? Or learn how to collect and analyse data from the emerging social media platform Bluesky? You can find this and more in the Digital Skills course programme, which is open to Master's students and mid-level faculty. Further information about the courses and registration links can be found on this website.
