Legal Philosophy and Commercial Law with a focus on Intellectual Property Law and the Law of New Technologies

At once both a foundational and border discipline, legal philosophy currently faces a twofold challenge. Its task is to not only position itself within the field of legal studies, but to also attain access to social developments outside the legal world. Thus in commercial law, legal philosophy is charged with providing social-theoretical orientation for areas of innovation such as intellectual property law and technology law. The chair of Prof. Dr. Malte Gruber devotes its energies to such concerns and continues the search for the philosophical foundations of positive law. In both teaching and research, the chair explores the implications of legal-philosophical reflection for doctrinal studies of law, pursues interdisciplinary links to the law of biotechnologies and information technologies, and opens broader perspectives on issues in commercial law and law and economics.
