Study guide
The program of the Graduate School began in the fall semester of 2010. It aims to promote a multidisciplinary approach including generic skills.
Specialized Skills
Colloquia on various subjects from the culture and social sciences faculty are held throughout the semester. They are open for PhD students and in some cases also for advanced students of the MA program. In these research colloquia dissertation projects will be presented and discussed. These subject-specific events are to be found in the lectures schedule (Vorlesungsverzeichnis) and in the KVV (Kommentiertes Vorlesungsverzeichnis) of the GSL (download).
The Graduate School also organizes lectures, conferences and workshops on specific topics. They cover a larger field and are generally interdisciplinary. They are open for members of the Graduate School (and for guests as well). Doctoral students in Lucerne, hence, are free to choose events according to their needs. The actual program you can find under "News".
Generic skills
The doctoral program at the Graduate School provides not only disciplinary but also technical qualifications. The visit of courses of generic skills is voluntary but will be mentioned in the certificate of the Graduate School. The aim within the doctoral program is to offer the following qualifications:
- Project Management (publication management, organization of conferences and meetings, information management)
- Communication skills (presentation of research results to an international audience)
- Scientific Writing (writing scientific articles in German and English)
- University Teaching (definition of learning objectives, design of courses, teaching methods, evaluation)
- Self-management and career planning (time management, conflict management, etc.)
- Networking and team working (the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and to develop and to maintain international research links)
Generic skills allow for the reflection of one's actions and the competent use of technical knowledge. They support doctoral students during the PhD and prepare them for further research and work. Since the fall semester of 2010 there are new university-wide range of courses in transferable skills at the University of Lucerne. These courses have been designed specifically for doctoral students in collaboration with the ProDoc tenor, the ProDoc ZRWP, the Seminar Health Sciences & Health Policy and the Teaching Development Centre. Each year, there are courses offered on the topics of "University Teaching", "self-and project management" and "communication skills" in German and English. The current program is ready for download: "Interfakultäres Kursangebot HS10/FS11: Generic Skills / überfachliche Kompetenzen für Doktorierende".
