Peter Studer was born in 1935 and grew up in Lucerne. He studied law in Zurich and Paris and was admitted to the Bar of Lucerne. Later on, he became editor at “Tages-Anzeiger”, one of Zurich’s daily newspapers, where he held the position of a US correspondent and, subsequently, became correspondent to the Swiss Government. Finally, he was the chief-editor of “Tages-Anzeiger” (1978/87) and a member of the board of directors. In 1989, he left the “Tages-Anzeiger” and accepted the position of the chief-editor at the Swiss National Television, where he led both the Department for Information and, later on, the Department for Culture (1989/99).
Since 2000, he has been working as an independent publisher and taught at Schools of Higher Education and at Universities (at Lucerne School of Economics and at the University of Lucerne). In 2001, he took over the presidency of the Swiss Press Council (until the end of 2007) and, in 2006, the presidency of the Swiss Association for Culture.
He is the author of the books “Medienrecht für die Praxis” (Media Law for Practioners), 3rd ed., Zurich 2006, co-edited by Rudolf Mayr von Baldegg and “Kunstrecht” (Art Law), Zurich 2003, co-edited by Bruno Glaus. Moreover, he has published numerous essays in daily newspapers, journals and anthologies – recently: “Der Galerievertrag” (The Gallery Contract), in: Schweizer Vertragshandbuch, Basel 2003.
In 2005, the University of St. Gallen awarded him the honour of Dr. iur. h.c. for his accomplishments in Media Ethics, Media Law and Art Law.
During autumn term 2007, Dr. Peter Studer was a guest-lecturer for the Seminars on “Aktuelle Fragen des Kunstrechts” (Current Issues of Art Law).


Dr. iur. Peter Studer (*1935) ist in Luzern aufgewachsen, hat in Zürich und Paris die Rechte studiert und das Luzerner Anwaltspatent erworben.
Hernach trat er in die Redaktion des Zürcher "Tages-Anzeigers" ein, wo er unter anderem als USA-Korrespondent und Bundeshaus-Korrespondent schrieb. Schliesslich wirkte er als Chefredaktor (1978/87) und in der Geschäftsleitung (1987/89). 1989 wechselte er zum Schweizer Fernsehen SF, wo er als Chefredaktor die Abteilungen Information und später auch Kultur leitete (1989/99).
Seit 2000 arbeitet er als freier Publizist, aber auch als Dozent an Fachhochschulen und Universitäten (darunter HSW und Universität Luzern). 2001 übernahm er das Präsidium des Schweizer Presserats (bis Ende 2007), 2006 dasjenige des Schweizerischen Kunstvereins.
Er hat die Bücher "Medienrecht für die Praxis" (3. A. Zürich 2006, mit Rudolf Mayr von Baldegg) und "Kunstrecht" (Zürich 2003, mit Bruno Glaus) verfasst. Daneben publizierte er zahlreiche Aufsätze in Tageszeitungen, Fachzeitschriften und Sammelbänden (zuletzt: "Der Galerievertrag", in: "Schweizer Vertragshandbuch", Basel 2003).
2005 verlieh ihm die Universität St. Gallen den Dr. iur. h.c. für Verdienste um Medienethik, Medienrecht und Kunstrecht.
Im Herbstsemester 2007 hat Dr. Peter Studer die Gastlehrveranstaltung "Aktuelle Fragen des Kunstrechts" im Umfang von einer Semesterwochenstunde übernommen.
