Incoming exchange students without previous knowledge or little knowledge of German (levels A and B) have the possibility to visit free of charge German language classes during their stay at the University of Lucerne.

Pre-Semester Intensive Language Course ‘German for Beginners’

During the semester breaks, just before the semester begins, the University of Lucerne offers its exchange students and other eligible audience a free pre-semester intensive course ‘German for Beginners’.

Content and Aim
This course is intended to prepare students to begin studying in Lucerne. Within levels A and B courses will be divided according to class level, depending on the number of participants. The course covers the four core skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing for everyday life in Lucerne. The focus lies on communicative skills and vocabulary.

Everyday situations will be covered; for instance, introducing yourself and others, living and working in Lucerne, numbers, money and time expressions, leisure activities, food and shopping, etc.

Next to classroom sessions, participants will also exercise their skills in every-day situations and get to know Lucerne and the Swiss way of life.

Dates/ Duration
fall semester 2011: September 12-15, 2011 (Monday-Thursday)

spring semester 2012: February 13-16, 2012 (Monday-Thursday)

Credits
For this course, no credits are awarded.

Materials
Free handouts will be distributed during the course. No further material needed.

Costs
The course is free of charge. It’s funded by the University of Lucerne.

Application
Eligible incoming exchange students will receive an official invitation to the course along with further information on the application procedure by the Mobility Office of the University of Lucerne in due time.

Language Course "German as a Foreign Language"

In collaboration with the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and the PHZ Lucerne (University of Teacher Education), the University of Lucerne offers interdisciplinary studies, giving students the chance to gather additional skills and knowledge outside their chosen field of study. In this context, exchange students of the University of Lucerne can visit a free of charge German language class that runs during the semester.The language course "German as a Foreign Language" targets non-German-speaking exchange students who wish to solidify and expand their knowledge of the German language.
