From Monday to Friday it is possible to leave the building via the normal exit until 22:00, and until 16:00 on Saturday. After these times, it is not possible to exit the building without a key.
Bancomat cash point
A Luzerner Kantonalbank cash point is located on the ground floor in the corridor between the information desk and the Studiladen student shop.
CampusCard
The credit card-shaped CampusCard acts as student identification and can also be used to pay for food in the canteen. Additional information on the CampusCard (in German only) can be found here
Canteen

A microwave is available in the room adjacent to the canteen. This can be used for heating up your own food.Members of all Swiss universities are entitled to discounts.
Children
Nappy changing facilities are located in the sanitary facilities on the ground floor and first floor of the basement. High chairs are available in the canteen. A microwave is available in the room adjacent to the canteen. This can be used for heating up baby food.
Day lockers (cloakroom lockers)
A room containing day lockers is located on the first floor of the basement. Additional lockers are located on the second floor. Students and external users of the library can use these lockers to store their personal effects. The lockers are fitted with a turning lock that can be secured using a private padlock. The day lockers must be emptied every day and cannot be reserved for a fixed period of time. Lockers that are not emptied will be unlocked and cleared out and the user will be billed for the inconvenience caused.
External users can make use of the coin-operated day lockers that are located on the first floor of the basement.
Disabled access
Wheelchair users have unobstructed access to the building via lifts, and via ramps in the central staircase on the third and fourth floors between the north and south sections of the building. These ramps are in place as these sections of the building are of different heights. Wheelchair spaces are available at the front of the tiered lecture theatres 1, 9 and 10 (which can be reached by lift in the north staircase, second floor of the basement) and at the entrance on the ground floor (lecture theatre 1), and in the rearmost rows on the first floor of the basement (lecture theatres 9 and 10).
There are two to three WCs that are suitable for wheelchair users on every floor, and those on the third and fourth floors on the north-east side are also fitted with a shower.
Three parking spaces for disabled students’ vehicles are reserved on the north side of the building, adjacent to the post office car park. Induction loops for the hearing impaired are installed in the lecture theatres and in a few seminar rooms. They activate automatically when the student touches the screen on the audio panel.
Emergencies/first aid
The emergency number is 041 229 50 50. This number should only be used in an emergency. Do not call the police, ambulance and fire service directly. The alarm should be raised at the information desk. The post room (E.219) on the ground floor is also a first-aid station. In the event that it is necessary to evacuate the building or part of the building, proceed immediately to the designated rendezvous point at Inseliquai. All escape routes (doors, corridors, stairwells) must be kept free at all times. The alarm systems and fire-extinguishing equipment must be ready for operation at all times. Naked flames and candles are not permitted anywhere in the building. Any instructions given by security officers must be followed at all times.

Information
Infodesk: Information desk: the university information desk is located next to the main entrance. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:00-18:30. This is the first point of contact for any enquiries.
Information screens: in addition to the information desk, two screens provide current information and details of events. One screen is operated by the UNI/ZHB, the other by the University of Teacher Education Central Switzerland (PHZ).
The University of Lucerne only displays information on courses and classes to which last-minute alterations have been made. Information on the rooms currently used for classes and courses is provided on the UniPortal.
Poster display cases: poster display cases and notice boards are located in the entrance foyer and on the 2nd to 4th floors. Event posters, information notices and flyers advertising external material should be handed in to the information desk for display. Any individual notices will be removed after a maximum of one month. This excludes notices providing details of an annual programme, and notices containing advance information. Notices displayed in locations other than the poster display cases and notice boards are not permitted and will be removed by Technical Services.
Direction signs: in order to make it easier to find your way around the building, the direction signs on the second to fourth floors distinguish between two separate wings:
- Wing A around the west atrium (wall colour: light green)
- Wing B around the east atrium (wall colour: burgundy)
Library
The new Main and University Library (ZHB) site on the first floor combines the previously decentralised sections of the library and the student library belonging to the University of Teacher Education Central Switzerland (PHZ), creating a large academic library right in the heart of Lucerne. The range of media available includes countless academic publications, reference works, collections of source material, introductory/basic literature and research literature.

No smoking
Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the building.
Parking spaces
Covered stands for approximately 600 bicycles are available on the south side of the building (next to the railway line). The building can be accessed directly from here. A small bicycle parking area intended exclusively for short-term use (maximum 1 hour) is located next to the main entrance. It is not permitted to park bikes in front of the main entrance or along any wing of the building.
150 covered parking spaces for motorcycles and scooters are located in the parking block. The entrance to the second floor next to the recreation area for the University of Teacher Education Central Switzerland (PHZ) can be used from here.
There are no parking spaces for cars. Private vehicles can be parked in the railway station car park. Three parking spaces reserved exclusively for disabled students’ vehicles are located next to the main entrance. The parking spaces at the adjacent post office are reserved for post office customers.
Printing/copying
Students can use the printing and photocopying facilities in the large photocopying room on the first floor of the basement, in the photocopying rooms in the library, in the University of Teacher Education Central Switzerland (PHZ) on the second floor and in the university (UNI) building on the third and fourth floors (next to the teaching rooms). Special rooms
Study rooms for students: a study room with 67 workstations is available for university students in the first floor of the basement. The PC terminals here can be used free of charge.
Prayer and meditation room: the prayer and meditation room is located on the first floor of the basement. This room has an atmosphere that is designed to be welcoming and conducive to contemplation. The symbols of the world’s major religions of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism stand for religious openness and tolerance. The room is available during the opening hours of the building. The university pastoral care service coordinates bookings for events in the prayer and meditation room.
Sports rooms: a fitness and dance room (group fitness) has been set up for University Sports (HSCL) on the first floor of the basement. It will be in operation from the spring semester 2012. In the sports area, there are two cloakrooms each for sports participants and staff. These are available to use immediately. These are also available to individuals who wish to do some training (joggers, cyclists). The cloakroom lockers must be emptied daily.
Tutorial room: the tutorial room on the first floor in the basement can be used for group work when it is not in use for scheduled classroom teaching.
Studiladen student shop
The Studiladen student shop is a retail outlet located on the ground floor that produces and sells lecture notes. It also stocks a small range of stationery. Additional information is available here
Study rooms and common rooms
More than 600 workstations are available on the first floor of the library. A study room with 67 workstations is available for university students on the first floor of the basement. The PC terminals here can be used free of charge. The tutorial room on the first floor in the basement can be used for group work when it is not in use for scheduled classroom teaching. Outside of the main dining hours, students can study in the canteen guest area and in the foyer. The canteen common room area is closed during major evening events.

Video surveillance
The entire façade of the building, the main entrance to the Main and University Library (ZHB), and the night-time entrance which provides access to the library are all under video surveillance. Only the head of Technical Services and his/her deputies have access to these video recordings and data. The legal provisions pertaining to the protection of data and privacy applys.
WLAN
All public rooms in the University of Lucerne and the University of Teacher Education Central Switzerland (PHZ), the foyer, library, classrooms and meeting rooms have WLAN. The WLAN coverage also extends to the ground floor forecourt (canteen area) and the recreation area on the 2nd floor.
Externe Nutzerinnen und Nutzer der Bibliothek erhalten gegen Ausweis an der Infotheke der ZHB einen Gästeaccount, um auf das WLAN zugreifen zu können. Angehörige anderer Hochschulen nutzen SWITCHconnect um sich mit dem Internet zu verbinden.
