Swiss Government scholarships for university, fine arts and music schools for foreign students

The Swiss Government awards a range of scholarships to foreign students through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS): university scholarships (Swiss universities and Federal Institutes of Technology), arts scholarships (schools of music and fine arts) and scholarships for universities of applied sciences (UAS). These scholarships provide graduates from all fields with the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies or research in Switzerland at a public funded university or recognised institution.

1 Overview

These scholarships are offered on the basis of reciprocity (fixed number of scholarships for each country) or within the frame of a scholarship pool (scholarships without fixed distribution by country). They are intended for students who have graduated from university (postgraduates) and who, by staying in Switzerland, will be able to further their education and to undertake research work in the fields in which the Swiss universities are particularly active.
This programme is valid only for studies in Switzerland. It is not valid for on-the-job studies, part-time studies or correspondence courses.

The scholarships are offered in principle to foreign governments. For a preliminary selection, the applications have to be submitted to the national institution in charge and the Swiss diplomatic representation in the student’s country of origin. The Swiss diplomatic representation will thereupon forward the pre-selected applications to the FCS for definitive selection. Finally the Federal Department of Home Affairs awards scholarships on the advice of the FCS.

2 Application procedure at the University of Lucerne

Please file your application for preliminary clarifications on behalf of the Admissions Office of the University of Lucerne (L_hc__ulinu--gnussaluz). The Admissions Office will then check the formal requirements and forward the application on behalf of the corresponding faculty. The faculty then checks, if a supervision of your research stay is possible.
If the assessment of the faculty is positive, you will receive a temporary admission (with a confirmation of supervision). If FCS approves of your application, you will be able to apply online at the University of Lucerne and file all necessary documents. After a thorough review of all filed documents, the Admissions Office will issue your official admission to the University of Lucerne (only this official admission authorizes you to apply for a visa).
