Born in Basel in 1960. Studied History and German at the University of Basel. She completed her degree in 1994 with a dissertation on the secularisation of death and the origins of mixed-denomination cemeteries in the Canton of Basel-Country in the 19th and 20th centuries. A grant for young scholars from the Swiss National Science Foundation facilitated research and study trips to Paris, Nantes and Tunis where she researched conflicts arising from the coexistence of Muslims, Jews and Christians in colonial and post-colonial Tunisia. She has worked as a (temporary) lecturer at the Universities of Bern, Zurich and Lucerne since 1998.
